Reading across: 1,500 words is 6 pages double spaced or 3 single spaced, 2,500 words is 10 double-spaced pages, and 3,000 words runs to 12. Arial and Calibri at 11 points fit about 10 percent more words on a page, so every count takes slightly fewer pages.

Multiply instead of dividing: a double-spaced page in 12-point Times New Roman holds 250 words, so 3 pages is 750 words, 5 pages is 1,250 words and a 10-page paper is about 2,500 words.

Pages to one decimal place, with halves rounded up, so 2.25 pages shows as 2.3; words to the nearest whole word. A 1.5-spaced page holds two-thirds of a single-spaced page.

Each takes a line of its own, often with extra space above and below.
02Block quotes and dialogue
Indented quotations and short lines of dialogue fill lines with few words.
03Spacing after paragraphs
Many word processor templates add space after every paragraph; set it to zero when your rubric asks for plain double spacing.
04The title page and the reference list
Both add pages without adding body words.
05Margins other than 1 inch
Wider margins put fewer words on each line.
