Dissertation Topics and Thesis Ideas: Examples by Field, and Where to Find Existing Dissertations
Good dissertation topics are questions, not subjects: five tests separate a topic worth a year of work from one that stalls. Below: those five tests, 100-plus field topics as researchable questions with a method in brackets, and the exact ProQuest searches showing whether your angle is taken.
On this page
- The five-test screen a topic must pass before you commit a year to it
- Dissertation topics by field
- Thesis ideas for master's students: one-year scope
- Topics that will stall you, and the versions of them that will not
- From topic to title: writing a dissertation title your committee accepts
- Where to find existing dissertations: the databases, ranked by what each is good for
- Running a gap check in ProQuest: the exact searches
- How to cite a dissertation or thesis from a database (APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 17)
- Turning an approved topic into a research proposal
Most topic lists stop at a subject line. This page goes further: every topic below is a question with a method attached, feeding the dissertation writing service once it survives a committee's first read.
The five-test screen a topic must pass before you commit a year to it
Run any candidate topic through these five tests in order — a topic that fails test one is worth fixing before tests two through five.
Test 1 - Is there a researchable question in it, or only a subject?
A subject names a topic; a question names a measurable relationship plus a method. Fail: "Social media and mental health." Pass: "Does daily short-form video use predict sleep-onset delay in teens, controlling for screen-time curfews? [correlational, survey]." This is how to choose a dissertation topic — question over subject.
Test 2 - Can you actually get the data? (access, cost, permissions, secondary datasets)
Primary data needs a recruitment plan and a site, or a secondary dataset such as IPEDS or ICPSR with a use agreement. Fail: a proprietary dataset with no agreement. Pass: a public dataset or confirmed access.
Test 3 - Will an IRB clear it, and at which review level?
Most topics fall into exempt, expedited, or full-board review depending on population and data sensitivity; vulnerable populations push toward full board, and CITI training is required regardless of level. IRB feasibility belongs at the topic stage, not after.
Test 4 - Does anyone on your faculty supervise it?
Supervisor fit means a faculty chair who publishes or supervises in your design and method, not just your subject area. A grounded-theory dissertation with no qualitative methodologist stalls regardless of topic strength.
Test 5 - Does it fit the months you have left?
A master's thesis runs a one-year scope; a doctoral dissertation runs two to four years. A topic sized for the wrong degree is the most common reason candidates go ABD.
- Test 1: The topic is a question with a method attached, not a subject line.
- Test 2: The data is accessible — a recruitment plan or a secondary dataset with a use agreement.
- Test 3: You know the likely IRB review level and have completed CITI training.
- Test 4: A faculty member who supervises this method and population is reachable.
- Test 5: The scope matches a master's or doctoral timeline.

Thesis ideas for master's students: one-year scope
Ideas for a thesis at the master's level fail for one reason: they're doctoral-sized questions with a shorter deadline. A one-year thesis needs a single site, one semester of data, or a secondary dataset in hand. Three sample thesis topics, narrowed from a doctoral scope:
- Doctoral-sized: "How does trauma-informed care affect patient outcomes across a hospital system?" Master's-sized: "Does a trauma-informed intake script change patient comfort scores in one ED over one semester? [quasi-experimental, single-site, pre-post]"
- Doctoral-sized: "How does teacher professional development affect achievement district-wide over five years?" Master's-sized: "Does a one-semester coaching cycle change formative-assessment use in six science classrooms? [mixed methods, single district]"
- Doctoral-sized: "How does organizational culture predict innovation across the technology sector?" Master's-sized: "Does psychological safety predict idea-submission rates on a 40-person product team over two quarters? [correlational, single-organization survey]"
If your program calls this a thesis rather than a dissertation, the five-test screen still applies; only test five's scope shifts. Master's thesis writing covers full-thesis and chapter-by-chapter orders once the topic is set. If your terminal deliverable is a capstone instead, the same screen feeds a practice problem rather than a research question — test three shifts from IRB review to your site's data-use agreement.
Topics that will stall you, and the versions of them that will not
Six broad subjects, rewritten as researchable questions.
| Topic that will stall you | The version that will not | Why the rewrite works |
|---|---|---|
| The effects of social media on teenagers | Does daily short-form video use predict sleep-onset delay in 14-17-year-olds, controlling for home screen-time curfews? [correlational, cross-sectional survey] | Added a variable, a population, and a control. |
| Leadership styles in the workplace | Does transformational leadership style predict voluntary turnover among early-career employees in remote-first technology firms? [correlational, survey] | Named the construct, outcome, and population instead of surveying the whole field. |
| Climate change and public policy | How do coastal-county planning directors describe barriers to adopting FEMA-funded managed-retreat policy? [qualitative, interviews] | Swapped a global subject for a population one researcher can reach. |
| Artificial intelligence in education | How do high-school teachers describe trust calibration when reviewing AI-generated feedback on student essays? [qualitative, grounded theory] | Moved from a trend to a specific role, behavior, and method. |
| Mental health in college students | Does a six-week mindfulness intervention reduce test anxiety in undergraduate STEM majors compared to a waitlist control? [RCT, pre-post survey] | Added a design, a comparison group, a defined population. |
| The impact of remote work | Does a four-day workweek pilot change self-reported burnout among knowledge workers in mid-size technology firms? [quasi-experimental, pre-post] | Traded a macro trend for one measurable outcome. |
From topic to title: writing a dissertation title your committee accepts
A dissertation title compresses the topic into four elements a reader scans for — construct, population, context, design. The formula: [Construct] and [Outcome] Among [Population] in [Context]: A [Design] Study. A thesis title follows the same formula, narrower in scope.
Five worked titles built from the formula:
- Transformational Leadership and Voluntary Turnover Among Early-Career Employees in Remote-First Technology Firms: A Correlational Study
- Trauma-Informed Case Management and Foster-Care Re-Entry Among Adolescents in County Child-Welfare Systems: A Quasi-Experimental Study
- Mindfulness-Based Interventions and Test Anxiety Among Undergraduate STEM Majors: A Randomized Controlled Trial
- Community Health Worker Home Visiting and Emergency-Department Utilization Among Uninsured Adults With Diabetes: A Quasi-Experimental Study
- Hot-Spot Policing and Violent-Crime Displacement in Mid-Size Urban Precincts: A Quantitative Study
Draft the title before chapter one, then rewrite it once your research questions are locked — a title that matches your abstract at defense reads as competence.
Where to find existing dissertations: the databases, ranked by what each is good for
A thesis and dissertation database search confirms a topic hasn't already been written — run it before you commit, not after. An online dissertation database search takes fifteen minutes and can save a semester.

Running a gap check in ProQuest: the exact searches
A proquest dissertation search isn't a general web search — field codes and filters make it a gap check, not a browse. A proquest thesis search run correctly returns a results count you can read.
PQDT search syntax and the filters that matter (subject, degree level, date, advisor, institution)
Three literal search patterns, using PQDT's advanced-search field codes:
AB(teacher retention) AND SU(elementary education) AND PDATE(2021-2026)— abstract plus subject plus a five-year filter, for recent work.TI("trauma-informed") AND DEG(doctoral) AND SCH("your institution")— title plus degree plus your own school, to check for close prior work.AB(hot-spot policing) AND SU(criminology) NOT AB(displacement)— abstract minus a sub-angle you expect covered, to isolate what's untouched.
Codes shown illustrate the pattern; confirm the current field list on your library's PQDT portal — codes can change Checked .
Reading a dissertation abstract for the gap statement rather than the findings
Every abstract states a gap in its final third, usually after "however." That sentence tells you what the author thinks is unanswered, which matters more than what they found.
ProQuest Dissertation Express, and the legacy UMI naming you will still see
ProQuest Dissertation Express is the paid path for a full-text copy your library doesn't carry. Older records still use the legacy proquest umi dissertation naming — UMI, the original publisher ProQuest acquired.
When your own dissertation appears in ProQuest, and embargoes
Your dissertation typically appears in PQDT within a few months of deposit. An embargo delays public release — commonly 6 months to 2 years — while the abstract stays visible; check your deposit agreement for its options.
Once you have three or four candidates that clear a gap check, commission the gap analysis as a standalone literature review rather than repeating the search each time.
How to cite a dissertation or thesis from a database (APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 17)
Citing a dissertation thesis from a database follows a fixed pattern per style:
| Style | Pattern |
|---|---|
| APA 7 | Lastname, F. M. (Year). Title of dissertation in sentence case (Publication No. XXXXXXX) [Doctoral dissertation, University Name]. ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. |
| MLA 9 | Lastname, Firstname. Title of Dissertation in Title Case. Year. University Name, PhD dissertation. ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, [permalink]. |
| Chicago 17 | Lastname, Firstname. "Title of Dissertation in Title Case." PhD diss., University Name, Year. ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. |
Two APA 7 variants: an unpublished dissertation drops the Publication Number and database name for "Unpublished doctoral dissertation." A repository copy swaps "ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global" for the repository's name and stable URL.
Turning an approved topic into a research proposal
A validated topic is not a proposal. The next step compresses it into a problem statement, then builds the theoretical framework, research questions, and methodology around it. Committees reject proposals that drift from the originally approved topic, so keep every draft tied to the original question.
If you already cleared the five-test screen, a methodologist can turn the topic into an approved proposal — chapters 1-3 or a standalone prospectus. Once that proposal clears, chapters 1-3 or later chapters can be ordered one at a time as each clears its own gate, rather than committing to the full manuscript up front. The intake process behind every order on this site, from brief to a confirmed writer, is mapped step by step on how it works, and the full price bands for a proposal, a chapter, or a complete dissertation sit on our pricing page.
FAQ
Does your dissertation topic matter after you graduate?
Yes, but less than candidates fear. Your topic shapes early publications and how hiring committees read your CV, but a well-executed dissertation on a narrow topic beats an ambitious one that stalled. Method competence and a clean defense matter more than novelty.
Can two people write dissertations on the same topic?
Yes. Overlapping topics are common if each dissertation asks a distinct question, uses a different population or context, or applies a different method. A PQDT gap check shows what's close, not forbidden — your committee decides if your angle is distinct enough.
How do I find my own dissertation on ProQuest?
Search PQDT by your name in the author field, or your exact title in quotes, filtered to your institution and graduation year. If it hasn't appeared, check your graduate school's submission timeline — most schools batch-submit after each degree-conferral date.
How long does ProQuest take to publish a dissertation?
Typically a few months after your institutional deposit, depending on how often your school batches submissions and whether you selected an embargo. Contact your graduate school's ETD office if it hasn't appeared after one full academic term.
How many topics should I take to my advisor?
Bring three, each run through the five-test screen, rather than one. Advisors weigh feasibility across vetted options faster than judging one idea alone, and you avoid restarting the conversation if the first choice fails on supervisor fit.
Can I change my topic after the proposal is approved?
Major changes to research questions or design typically require an amended proposal defense, since the committee approved the specific design, not just the subject. Minor refinements — a narrower population, an added control variable — are usually fine with your chair's sign-off.
